Maria Hinds

My work addresses waste, leftovers, commodity, world order and environmental issues. My latest body of work draws on the human experience of loss and displacement resulting from a natural disaster. Drawings of the wreckage post Hurricane Katrina are an emotional investigation into traces of humanity left in the wake of a situation seemingly devoid of any humanity. Piles of debris conceal histories – individual, family and that of streets and entire communities.

The destroyed homes are deconstructed portraits of peoples lives. My drawings attempt to describe, search for and remember these lives. I have been involved in art based exchanges between
youth in Dublin and New Orleans and am iniating further after school programmes and workshops in New Orleans.
