Marisol Malatesta
My artistic practice examines gender and racial stereotypes as well as ideas related to processes of cultural exchange and non-belonging by means of painting and drawing.
Much of my work explores imagery that references folklore and Peruvian iconography, appropriating images from colonial art, architecture and ancient artefacts. These works hold specific interest to me, referencing both my European heritage and South American upbringing; with European great masters in one hand, and archaeological and mythical artefacts in the other.
More often than not this imagery explores traditional canons of representation, but also examines the discourses of colonialism that underpin them. Through subversive wit, my work transforms this imagery, adding references from popular culture, including advertisements, the news, magazines, the internet and found artefacts. Disruptive new meanings appear by changing these elements from their original context.
